The Challenge of Everyday Frustrations
We’re all wired to be easily triggered, just usually in the wrong direction. Think about it: a bit of Wi-Fi trouble, a long supermarket queue, or a missed train is enough to sour our whole mood. Our threshold for frustration is rock-bottom.
But what about our threshold for joy? It seems sky-high. We often act as if delight must come with fireworks, life-changing news, or monumental events. It’s no wonder that joy feels scarce.
What If Joy Worked Differently?
Imagine this: a stranger smiling at us, a favourite song playing on the radio, a dog tumbling about in the park, or simply enjoying a good cup of tea. Why shouldn’t these moments make us glow? Why can’t they count as wins?
I’ve started calling them Joy tokens. These are the tiny, everyday moments that most of us dismiss as “too small to matter.” But here’s the trick: if you actually collect them, they add up.
The Power of Small Wins
Small wins aren’t feeble; they’re resistance training for your nervous system. They remind you that joy doesn’t only live in the extraordinary; it hides in the ordinary too.
When we acknowledge these small victories, we begin to shift our perspective. Each Joy token we collect serves as a reminder that life is filled with delightful moments, waiting to be noticed.
How to Collect Your Joy Tokens
Be Present: Take a moment to pause and appreciate your surroundings. Notice the little things that bring you joy.
Practice Gratitude: At the end of each day, write down three small moments that made you smile. This simple practice can help you see the abundance of joy in your life.
Share Your Joy: Talk about your Joy tokens with friends or loved ones. Sharing these moments can amplify their significance and create a sense of connection.
Create Joy Rituals: Incorporate small activities into your daily routine that bring you happiness. Whether it’s enjoying your morning coffee or taking a walk in nature, these rituals can help you stay connected to joy.
The Impact of Joy on Our Lives
When we actively seek out and collect our Joy tokens, we begin to experience a shift in our overall well-being. This practice can lead to increased happiness, reduced stress, and a greater sense of fulfillment.
As we embrace these small wins, we cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. We learn to appreciate the beauty in the mundane and find joy in the journey of life.

So the next time something small gives you delight, don’t shrug it off. Pocket it. That’s another Joy token in the bank.
